South Park Recreation Center, Inc (SPCRC) is a Colorado 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to the establishment of the forthcoming Recreation Center in South Park.
A recreation center committee was organized in 1993 by a group of citizens who shared the belief that South Park was in need of a facility for indoor recreation and various community programs.
In 1994, the Fanning Family donated a 4.7-acre parcel of land where the center will be located.
In 1997, the committee established the South Park Recreation Center, Inc (SPCRC) - a Colorado 501(c)(3) non-profit organization - in order to fundraise and pursue grant monies.
In 1998, SPCRC promoted the establishment of the South Park Park and Recreation District (SPPRD) - a State of Colorado special district established by the vote of the community. As a special district, the SPPRD is a government entity with the authority to put tax proposals before the public. SPPRD serves approximately 6000 residents over 1200 square miles.
Both the SPCRC and SPPRD Boards of Directors work in close cooperation towards the establishment of the forthcoming Recreation Center in South Park.
In May 2002, the SPPRD placed both an operational levy and construction bond question on the ballot. The citizens of the district area voted yes to both questions.
In March of 2003, Newcastle Construction Services Inc. was selected as the General Contractor, Ohlson Lavoie Corporation was selected as the architect, and GreenPlay, LLC was selected as the center's operational consultant.
As of July 2003, we were finalizing design-build plans with our partners Newcastle and Ohlson Lavoie. The official ground breaking ceremony for construction of the Recreation Center was held at the site location on November 12, 2003.
By December 2004, construction of Phase I was nearly completed and staff was hired.
The Recreation Center's Grand Opening was held on February 15, 2005. We were open for business!
